A McLuhan Centenary Symposium – Fordham University Lincoln Center Campus

The September 17 Symposium will feature a keynote by Eric McLuhan; talks on new media by Paul Levinson, Bob Logan, and Bob Blechman; a session on McLuhan at Fordham featuring his former students including Pete Fornatale and John Carey, as well as his former assistant Paul Ryan; a session on McLuhan and Theology featuring a talk by Joseph Kim; a screening of the rarely seen 1961 television program The Gutenberg Galaxy, produced by Gary Gumpert; followed by a panel discussion with Gumpert, Joshua Meyrowitz, Daniel Czitrom, Paul Grosswiler, and the new head of the McLuhan Program at the University of Toronto, Dominique Scheffel-Dunand. In conjunction with the centenary celebrations, we will also have a special preview screening of Tiffany Shlain’s documentary, Connections, on September 25.

 Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) at Fordham, circa 1967, with John Culkin, at that time a Jesuit and Professor of Communication at Fordham. Culkin brought McLuhan to Fordham for the 1967-1968 school year as the Albert Schweitzer Professor of the Humanities.
