Another McLuhan-related Nuite Blanche Event, Toronto

“All media work us over completely. They are so pervasive in their personal, political, economic, aesthetic, psychological, moral, ethical, and social consequences that they leave no part of us untouched, unaffected, unaltered. The medium is the massage. Any understanding of social and cultural change is impossible without a knowledge of  the way media work as environments. – The Medium is the Massage (1967), p. 26

Your idea of art consists of video games and robots
Technology is a major theme of Nuit Blanche this year, curator Shirley Madill says. “It’s ubiquitous in how it affects our lives, yet we don’t think about it a lot because it’s just there — it’s a numbing.” So what better way to become aware of our technological surroundings than a visit to Marshall McLuhan’s Massage Parlour (Metropolitan Hotel, 108 Chesnut St)? Although, it’s not what it sounds like: Instead of backrubs, it’s a play on a printing error that saw McLuhan’s famous work titled The Medium is the Massage. Expect an immersive, technological world that pays ode to McLuhan’s more familiar texts. Consider it a message parlour.
